Science

Vision Statement

At Town Field Primary, we recognise the importance that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) has on modern life and career prospects for our pupils. In an ever growing technological world, our vision is to provide pupils with the fundamental skills to explore, question and discover the world around them in order to gain a deeper understanding of the world we live in.

Children are naturally inquisitive and love to learn. At Town Field, we acknowledge that children who are actively engaged, perform at their very best. As such, our Science curriculum focuses primarily on providing children with fun, practical and hands on experiences to develop and deepen their knowledge.

We provide children with the opportunity to work both inside and outside the classroom and develop a sense of excitement in each activity. We encourage children to identify how Science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse possible causes.

We ensure that Science is taught through the five fundamental ‘Working Scientifically’ approaches which we embed into our curriculum and teaching;

  • observing over time
  • pattern seeking
  • identifying, classifying and grouping
  • comparative and fair testing (controlled investigations)
  • researching using secondary sources

For further information on individual year groups’ Science units and learning outcomes please see our Curriculum overviews on year group pages.
