The children were asked to make a chassis, the axle was fixed with the wheel free to rotate around it. The children used materials, tools and equipment safely and appropriately.

This unit built on our experiences of joining and combining sheet and reclaimed materials and of using moving joints. We learnt about wheels and axles and how to use them when making wheeled vehicles for a specific purpose. We were encouraged to develop our design ideas based on investigating vehicles in the world around us. We also had the opportunity to use construction kits, and computer generated graphics or text to enhance our finished products, to apply basic measuring skills and to draw on knowledge of forces from science.

We gained an understanding of how simple mechanisms related to moving vehicles work, after clarifying our ideas through discussion; we have made a wheeled vehicle which moves and which generally matches our design intention.
