 Allotment Gardens
(Earth Centre)

21st Century Terraced Gardens
These gardens face south to make the most of the sun. The white of the limestone clad walls of the terraces reflects the warmth of the sun onto the soil.

The gardens are on three levels, showcasing local, national and global organic gardening techniques and produce. Each level has soils ranging from alkaline, which represents the limestone to the east of the gardens, to acid, which is the coal spoil to the west.

Grassed orchards top the terraces and it is hoped that the fruit and vegetables from the orchards and gardens will provision the restaurant, eat.organic@earthcentre.

We walked around the terraced gardens at Earth Centre. We saw lots of vegetables and fruit growing. We fed the chickens and a duck. The gardens were built on a recycled coal tip. The soil was improved with lots of manure and compost. Now there are lots of wonderful plants growing.

If you open up a broad bean seed, you can see the 2 cotyledons, and inside them is the tiny root a ready to grow, and also 2 tiny true leaves.

If you wait until the seeds go dry and hard on the plant, then the seeds can be planted to make NEW plants for next year.
